2005-06 Vancouver Canucks preview

(MySportsbook.com) - The Vancouver Canucks have their dynamic duo back.

After missing Todd Bertuzzi for the tail end of the 2003-04 season and the playoffs, the Canucks will have "Big Bert" in the lineup as this campaign begins. Commissioner Gary Bettman reinstated the rugged power forward following the ratification of the new collective bargaining agreement, meaning that Bertuzzi and Canucks captain Markus Naslund can again wreak havoc on opposing defense corps.

Naslund and Bertuzzi have been the spearheads of a Canucks' attack that has become one of the league's most dangerous. This, in combination with a stern defense anchored by Ed Jovanovski and Mattias Ohlund, has made Vancouver a perennial playoff club.

The Canucks have especially thrived under head coach Mark Crawford, recording at least 100 points in each of the last two NHL seasons. In 03-04 they won their first division title in more than a decade.

New general manager Dave Nonis didn't make much noise during the NHL's abbreviated offseason. He did re-sign several key players, and add right wing Anson Carter and backup goaltender Brent Johnson.

Overall, the Canucks will attempt to get back to the postseason and finally take things a step further. The Western Conference has leveled off a bit due to the league's financial overhaul, and that should be in Vancouver's favor.

FORWARDS - Naslund and Bertuzzi hope to get back to the level they were at in 2002-03. That season Naslund was second in the NHL in scoring with 104 points (48g, 56a), while Bertuzzi finished fifth with 97 (46g, 51a). They also combined for 59 power-play goals. The next campaign, Naslund was fourth in the NHL scoring race with 84 points (35g, 49a) and was a career-high plus-24.

Centering Naslund and Bertuzzi will be Brendan Morrison, who is the table- setter of the line. His playmaking skills are a perfect complement to the skills that Naslund and Bertuzzi have, Morrison has posted at least 20 goals and 60 points in each of the last three campaigns.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin enter their fifth season since entering the NHL together in 2000. Both players have developed slowly, although they each registered career years in 03-04. Henrik, the playmaker of the two, has posted back-to-back 31-assist seasons, while Daniel, the goal-scorer, managed a personal-best 54 points (18g, 36a) and plus-18 rating in 03-04.

Trevor Linden, who kept busy during the lockout as the NHLPA's president, is now 35 years old, but has been a capable second-line forward in recent years. The franchise's all-time leading scorer played in all 82 games during 03-04, netting 14 goals with 22 assists. More importantly, Linden brings those much- needed intangibles with him.

Carter was an overlooked acquisition by the Canucks. He has been bounced around since leaving Edmonton a few years back, and hopes to get back to his peak production. This could be a optimum situation for the rugged winger, as he will only be counted on for second or third line numbers. Carter managed back-to-back 60-point seasons from 2001-03, but his output waned after a trade to New York and ensuing deals to Washington and Los Angeles.

DEFENSE - Jovanovski and Ohlund are two massive blueliners who can wreck an opposing forward or score a key goal at the other end of the ice. Jovanovski was hurt for a good chunk of 03-04, but still managed seven goals and 16 assists in 56 games. Ohlund, meanwhile, tallied 14 goals and 20 assists in 82 games.

Both Jovanovski and Ohlund can log ice time in each and every situation. Both players skate for over 25 minutes per game on a regular basis.

Bryan Allen, who stands at 6-4, 220 pounds, should see more ice time in the second pairing, while Sami Salo enters his third campaign with the club. Salo bagged seven goals with 19 assists in 03-04, including five scores and 10 helpers on the power play.

GOALTENDING - Dan Cloutier has managed at least 30 wins in each of the past three NHL seasons, including a 33-21-6 record and 2.27 goals-against average in 60 appearances last time out. However, Cloutier's playoff history is what has folks in Vancouver concerned. In four postseasons with the Canucks, he is 9-12 with a 3.43 goals-against average. He played fairly well in the first round against Calgary in '04, but an ankle injury forced him from the series.

Brent Johnson was signed as insurance for Cloutier. Johnson appeared to be on his way to a stardom for St. Louis back in 01-02, but his star has fallen since. Johnson missed the majority of the past two NHL seasons with injuries, and a lot will hinge on his ability to remain out of the trainer's room. In 2001-02 he dazzled for the Blues, going 34-20-4 with a 2.18 GAA and .902 save percentage.

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE - The Canucks are again loaded for bear up front and stabilized on defense. The only serious questions surround the goaltending crease, where Cloutier needs to stand up and make up for his prior postseason failure. That's the only way this club will get past the first or second round.
