2005-06 LA Kings preview

(MySportsbook.com) - The NHL wants more offense in this post-lockout era. So it's no surprise that the Los Angeles Kings' focus this offseason was to add some punch to their attack.

GM Dave Taylor signed free agents Pavol Demitra and Valeri Bure and acquired Jeremy Roenick via trade from the cap-troubled Philadelphia Flyers. In 2004 the club added former Blues and Flames standout Craig Conroy.

Gone are the oft-injured Jason Allison and Adam Deadmarsh (retirement), as well as Martin Straka and Jozef Stumpel.

The team does have questions in goal, as former Montreal backup Mathieu Garon will take the job. Garon went through a year of seasoning in the AHL last season, but it's now time for him to step on up to the big stage.

LA has benefited greatly from the new collective bargaining agreement, and much will depend on how much of a lift the Kings can get from vets with pedigree like Roenick and Demitra.

FORWARDS - Roenick became available when the Flyers signed former Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg, and the Kings picked him up for future considerations. However, the chatterbox centerman has already become a concern, as he sustained the 11th documented concussion of his NHL career during the preseason. At this point, it appears as if the former 50-goal scorer will be back at some point. However, concussions all but ruined his 03-04 season, and given his history the team must be cautious.

Demitra has been among the league's most consistent point producers in recent years. He is a guy who can score 35 goals and dish out 55 assists in the same season. Demitra, who will turn 31 in November, should especially boost a Kings power play that struggled last time out.

Conroy should fit nicely as the Kings' second-line center behind Roenick. A character guy who is capable of producing 60-75 points as he proved with Calgary, Conroy also shines as a shutdown forward. He showed his true worth during the Flames' run to the '04 Finals, finishing fifth in NHL playoff scoring and posting a plus-12 rating.

An x-factor will be Bure, whose first objective must be to remain healthy. He hasn't played close to an entire season since 2000-01 with Calgary, when he posted 27 goals and 28 assists. In 68 games during the 03-04 campaign, the younger brother of Pavel potted 22 goals with 30 assists while splitting time between Florida and Dallas.

Alexander Frolov, the Kings' first-round selection in the 2000 Entry Draft, led the team in goal-scoring with 24 markers in 03-04, his second NHL campaign. He's a big kid at 6-3, 210 pounds and can burn you off a rush or in the corners.

Luc Robitaille's career appeared to be nearing the end following an off-year with Detroit, but in 03-04 he bounced back after returning to LA. The sure-bet Hall of Famer rebounded with 22 goals and 29 assists in 80 games, proving he does have some of that sniper's touch left in him yet.

Former No. 1 draft picks Dustin Brown and Mike Cammalleri will be looked upon to provide production off the third line. Both players are expected to play in their first full NHL campaigns in 05-06.

DEFENSE - Captain Mattias Norstrom returns to anchor the blue line. He isn't flashy by any means but is a steady presence. Don't look for the Swede to pile up goals from the point, as he has only 10 tallies in 684 career games.

Lubomir Visnovsky is a terrific offensive threat who is only entering his fifth season. He posted eight goals and 21 assists in 58 games for LA in 03-04, but went through his second straight injury-plagued campaign. Visnovsky is undersized at 5-10, 188 pounds, so don't look for him to dish out big hits very often.

Aaron Miller has also been injured for much of the past two NHL seasons, but when healthy he is a big guy who can clear space in front of the net for his goaltender.

Nathan Dempsey, Tim Gleason and Joe Corvo will likely be in the mix as well for a defense corps whose only significant subtraction was that of Jaroslav Modry. Modry inked a deal with Atlanta.

GOALTENDING - Garon spent last season with the Manchester Monarchs in the AHL, going 32-14-4 with a 2.12 goals-against average in 52 contests. He has seen parts of four seasons with Montreal, going 16-20-3 with a 2.59 GAA in 43 appearances. Expect this 27-year-old to enjoy some success in Hollywood, but whether or not he can succeed with a starter's workload remains to be seen.

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE - The Kings have been ravaged by injuries in recent years, but many of those games missed can be attributed to players no longer on the roster. The additions of Demitra and Roenick should provide a lift, and the team has numerous youngsters ready to contribute. The Western Conference isn't the top-heavy entity it once was, so their chance for a playoff spot is as good as any. The team has left itself some cap room too, so if a hole needs to be filled during the season there is flexibility.
