2005-06 Dallas Stars preview
(MySportsbook.com)
- Like a lot of NHL teams,
the Dallas Stars have lost some of their veteran
savvy.
However, it could have been much
worse.
Pierre Turgeon, Richard Matvichuk,
Shayne Corson, Teppo Numminen, Scott Young and
Valeri Bure were among those who left Big D.
Thankfully, captain Mike Modano and defenseman
Sergei Zubov opted to stay.
Modano was reportedly on his
way to Boston, then he rejected a Stars' contract
offer. In the end, though, everything worked
out for both parties and the American star remained
with the only franchise he has ever known.
Modano, 35, is joined by other
returnees like Zubov, Bill Guerin, Jason Arnott,
Jere Lehtinen, Brenden Morrow and Marty Turco.
Head coach Dave Tippett, meanwhile, enters his
third season behind the Stars' bench.
The Pacific Division is expected
to be an interesting race this season, and the
Stars will be in the mix. However, look for
some bumpy spots, something to expect when a
roster loses so many experienced parts.
FORWARDS - Modano
is the best player in franchise history and
one of the elite players of his era. He watched
his production drop in 2003-04, tallying only
14 goals and 30 assists in 76 games. In addition,
the perennial All-Star was a horrid minus-21.
This came after an 02-03 campaign in which he
registered 85 points, the second-best season
of his career from a production standpoint.
Bill Guerin remains one of the
NHL's top power forwards. In 03-04 he posted
34 goals and 35 assists in 82 games, also adding
109 penalty minutes. Guerin proved his worth
in key situations as well, as 10 of his 34 goals
were game- winners.
Guerin had much of his success
in 03-04 playing alongside Jason Arnott and
Brenden Morrow. All three players have size
and like to use it, making the unit very difficult
for opposing defenders to contain. Arnott registered
21 goals and a team-high 36 assists in 03-04,
while Morrow tallied a career-high 49 points
(25g, 24a).
Jere Lehtinen, a two-time Selke
winner, has built a resume as one of the league's
top two-way forwards. He hopes to remain healthy
this season, something that didn't happen in
03-04. He was limited to 13 goals and 13 assists
in 58 games. The previous season was more along
the lines of what Dallas expects, as he tallied
a career-high 31 goals and was a plus-39.
Veteran Stu Barnes and center
Niko Kapanen will also be keys up front, and
the team is high on Antti Miettinen. The latter
player was a star in Finland but has not quite
found his stride in North America. Last season
he posted eight goals and 20 assists in 35 games
for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.

DEFENSE - Zubov
is all that remains of the terrific top-four
that anchored the Stars' success in the late
1990s. Matvichuk, Derian Hatcher and Darryl
Sydor are all wearing other sweaters, leaving
the smooth-skating Russian in the No. 1 spot.
Zubov has reached double-digit goal totals nine
times in his career, and is an overall plus-126.
Zubov will have help leading
the corps with Philippe Boucher. who will provide
some stability as a pure defender who can sprinkle
in some offense here and there. Jon Klemm, meanwhile,
is strictly a stay-at-home guy who enters his
first full season with the Stars after being
acquired from Chicago.
Martin Skoula is a skater to
keep your eye on. He was a youngster with a
tremendous upside in Colorado several years
ago, and has been respectable since. Skoula,
who stands at 6-3, 220 pounds, can be an asset
offensively, especially on the power play.
The Stars' defense is nowhere
near the caliber it was during the team's dominant
era few years back, but it should be respectable.
GOALTENDING
- Turco replaced Ed Belfour several years ago
and has since become one of the NHL's premier
netminders. His career goals-against average
is a meager 1.91, and he has posted a save percentage
of .922. In 03-04 he logged a career-high 73
games (72 starts), going 37-21-13 with a 1.98
GAA and .913 SP.
Turco will be backed up by Johan
Hedberg, who joins the third team of his young
NHL career. In 03-04 he backed up Dan Cloutier
in Vancouver, going 8-6-2 with a 2.51 GAA and
.900 SP in 21 appearances (17 starts).
WHEN ALL IS SAID
AND DONE - The Stars are a team in
transition, but that doesn't mean they can't
still be a playoff club. The Pacific Division
will be tough, with San Jose as the reigning
champs and Phoenix and Anaheim both improved.
They do have that all-important x-factor with
a stud like Turco between the pipes, so don't
expect too much of a drop-off. Playoffs are
a definite maybe.
