2005-06 Anaheim Mighty Ducks preview
(MySportsbook.com)
- The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
will essentially have a fresh start for the
2005-06 season.
New ownership. New general manager.
New head coach.
Now it's just a matter of putting
it all together for an organization 2 1/2 years
removed from playing a Game 7 in the Stanley
Cup Finals.
New owners Henry and Susan Samueli
named former Canucks exec Brian Burke as their
GM immediately after taking the reins, and Randy
Carlyle was hired to replace Mike Babcock as
head coach. Babcock turned down a new deal from
the team and subsequently took the Detroit Red
Wings' bench job.
From a player standpoint, the
Ducks' biggest splash came with the signing
of reigning Norris Trophy winner Scott Niedermayer
in early August. Niedermayer was widely looked
upon as the premier multi-dimensional defenseman
on the free agent market. Niedermayer, who mulled
over other offers, opted to unite with his brother
Rob for the first time in their NHL careers.
Burke also added former Duck
Teemu Selanne, who hopes a change of scenery
can help him re-gain his scorer's touch, if
it can in fact be re-gained.
All-in-all, the Ducks should
be an interesting club to keep an eye on this
season. With the above changes, plus holdovers
like goaltender J.S. Giguere and forwards Sergei
Fedorov and Petr Sykora, there are pieces here
that can contribute to success.
An x-factor could be Carlyle,
who will embark on his first season as an NHL
head man. He has logged time as an assistant
with the Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals,
and his time as bench boss of the minor league
Manitoba Moose was a success. Taking that success
into an NHL dressing room could be another story,
but right now he gets the benefit of the doubt.
FORWARDS - Fedorov,
one of the world's premier all-around talents,
will take aim at his fifth straight 30-goal
season in his second campaign since joining
the Ducks. His first year in Orange County didn't
mirror his Hart Trophy winning effort in 1994,
but it was productive nevertheless. What remains
to be seen is how the new rules will effect
a player like Fedorov, whose combination of
size, speed and skill have reserved him a spot
at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Selanne hopes a return to Anaheim
will fix whatever went wrong during his one-
year stint in Colorado. The reunion of Selanne
and former Ducks captain Paul Kariya in Denver
was anything but spectacular. The Fin tallied
a career-low 16 goals in 78 games for the Avs
in 03-04, making his past sniping escapades
seem like decades ago.
Sykora will play his third season
with the Ducks after establishing himself as
a viable commodity with the New Jersey Devils.
Sykora, once part of the famed "A-Line"
with the Devils, potted 34 goals during the
Ducks' thrilling 02-03 season, but dropped to
23 the following year. If he can net between
25 and 30, with at least 10 coming on the power
play you'd have to think the team's brass would
be pleased.
Rob Niedermayer has shown the
ability to score at times during his career,
but for the most part he can be relied on upon
to be your checking centerman. His problem recently,
however, has been staying healthy. Niedermayer
hasn't appeared in more than 67 games since
1999-2000 while still a member of the Florida
Panthers.
A player to keep an eye and ear
on this season might be youngster Joffrey Lupol,
who will log his second NHL campaign. The former
first round pick (2002) impressed with a modest
13 goals and 21 assists in his rookie season
and fine tuned his game with Cincinnati of the
AHL. He posted 30 goals and 26 assists in 65
games for the baby Ducks during the lockout.

DEFENSE - Niedermayer
had a terrific tenure with the Devils, but it
will be interesting to see how he performs without
the shackels. He has posted double- digits in
goals in each of the last three seasons while
playing for a New Jersey club that has thought
defense-first for over a decade. At 32, look
for Niedermayer to bring his offensive game
up a notch playing with the likes of Fedorov
and Sykora, while at the same time remaining
as defensively responsible as ever.
Niedermayer gives the Ducks a
second power-play QB to complement Sandis Ozolinsh,
who remains among the NHL's premier "offensive
defensemen." He battled injury in 03-04,
but if healthy he should be good for at least
10 goals and 35 assists. Of course, Ozolinsh
does leave a lot to be desired in the defensive
zone, but that's something clubs have had to
deal with his whole career.
Keith Carney has always been
somewhat of an unsung hero, but he showed his
worth during the Ducks' run to the Finals in
'03. He isn't flashy and doesn't put up stellar
offensive numbers like the above duo, but he
is steady and eats up a ton of minutes, many
of which are against the opposition's top line.
Ruslan Salei and Vitaly Vishnevski
were also key components during the run of '03,
and both are more effective as pure defenders.
Vishnevski has the ability to be a physical
force despite the fact that he is only 203 pounds.
GOALTENDING -
Giguere was the story during the spring of 2003,
as he carried the team on several nights on
the way to the Finals. However, like the rest
of the club the former Conn Smythe Trophy winner
came back down to earth. His goals-against average
ballooned to 2.62 and save percentage dropped
to .914. The onus will be on Giguere to prove
that '03 wasn't an aberration, because if he
falters, securing a playoff berth will be an
uphill climb.
The backup job was vacated when
Martin Gerber was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes
in '04. The most likely candidate for the gig
is Ilya Bryzgalov, who has had two one-game
stints with the big club. He has spent most
of the past four seasons playing for Cincinnati,
and he went 17-13-1 with a 2.60 GAA last campaign.
WHEN ALL IS SAID
AND DONE - Anaheim might not put it
all together with its new leadership this season,
but things definitely appear headed in the right
direction. The Western Conference playoff picture
appears cloudy, especially with the losses suffered
by the elite clubs in the wake of the lockout.
Playoffs for the Ducks? Why not, but it won't
be a smooth ride.
