Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, professional
hockey team and one of five teams in the Pacific
Division of the Western Conference of the National
Hockey League (NHL). Named for the Walt Disney
movie “The Mighty Ducks,” the team
plays at an arena called Arrowhead Pond near
Disneyland in Anaheim, California, and wears
uniforms of purple, jade, silver, and white.
After the success of other professional
hockey teams in California, such as the Los
Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks, Walt Disney
Corporation petitioned the NHL for the rights
to an expansion team and the franchise was awarded
in 1992. In 1993 the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
joined the league with another expansion team,
the Florida Panthers. The Ducks played respectably
in their inaugural season under head coach Ron
Wilson, finishing fourth in the Pacific Division
and making a run for a playoff berth. The Ducks
fell to last place in the Pacific Division in
the strike-shortened 1994-95 season.
Left wing Paul Kariya emerged
as one of the league’s best forwards in
the 1995-96 season. He led the Ducks with 50
goals, was selected for the NHL All-Star First
Team, and won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy,
which is awarded annually to the league’s
most gentlemanly player. In the 1996-97 season
the Ducks, under the scoring leadership of Kariya
and right wing Teemu Selanne, made it to the
second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. There
they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings.
The Newest Look
MD. So. Cal Hockey has been established
as a means to cultivate the pride for the Mighty
Ducks and pride for Southern California Hockey.
It gives area fans the chance to support an
exciting Southern California hockey franchise-
the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. During the design
process for the sub-brand logo the club looked
to build on the success of 2003-2004’s
third jersey. In an effort to do so, the MD
shoulder patch was incorporated and the club
maintained the use of the Mighty Ducks crest
by placing it on the puck that rests between
So.Cal and Hockey. Thereby successfully merging
Anaheim’s memorable past with its promising
future.
The New Jersey Debuts
On September 29, 2003, for the
third time Mighty Ducks history, the team introduced
a Third Jersey. The new sweater represents pride,
excellence, strength, excitement and aggressiveness,
using black with dark plum, silver and white
accenting as its color palate. The front crest
of the Third Jersey bears the name of the team’s
home city, Anaheim. The emphasis on Anaheim
is to show the dedication and pride for the
city and their fans. The Third Jersey gives
a classic and distinguished look to the Mighty
Ducks and the sweater’s dark colors represent
the Mighty Ducks dedication to the game of hockey
and to their strength and intensity on the ice.
How It All Began
On October 2, 1992, Walt Disney
Pictures released the hit movie “The Mighty
Ducks” and created a new wave of excitement
among the nation’s youth and ice hockey.
Starring Emilio Estevez and a band of kids who
learn to play and win as a team, “The
Mighty Ducks” grossed $51 million at the
box office and served as the inspiration for
the name fo the Walt Disney Company’s
NHL club.
The official team colors and
logo were unveiled on June 7, 1993, and Mighty
Ducks merchandise was immediately propelled
into on of the top sellers in all of professional
sports.
Purple, jade, silver and white
were chosen as the team’s colors while
an attractive crest featuring a duck head-shaped
hockey mask was chosen to give the club its
own unique identity.
