NHL
OPINION
October
3rd, 2007
The puck has dropped in the 2007-08
season and the defending champion
Anaheim Ducks are off to a mild start.
Without Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer
in the lineup, the Ducks +450 chances
at winning the Stanley Cup are in
serious doubts. Can the Ottawa Senators,
Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings
and New York Rangers take advantage
of this window of opportunity?
In the far more talented Western
Conference, the usual contenders
will battle it out for regular season
supremacy. However, the +2000 Nashville
Predators have taken some serious
losses on their roster. As is stands
right now, the +3500 Colorado Avalanche
look to be the team to bet on in
our NHL futures as the team to make
it in to the playoffs and replace
the wounded Preds.
Free-agency
altered the landscape of the playoff
picture in the Eastern Conference
as the Philadelphia Flyers have
risen from their status as the
NHL’s punching bag to emerge
as a contender for the Stanley Cup
at +1000 in our NHL sportsbook. The
New York Rangers are pegged as favorites
with +750 odds with Chris Drury and
Scott Gomez being the biggest free-agency
difference makers this summer. However,
all roads will have to go through
Ottawa, where the defending Eastern
Conference champion Senators will
refuse to give up their title without
a good fight.
Picking your long-term investments
can be a difficult art form in hockey.
Keep an eye on teams with marquee
goaltending and beefy blue-lines
to have a better shot at making it
to the Stanley Cup Finals as opposed
to teams that flash a high octane
offense. Teams like Pittsburgh are
surefire takes in the regular season,
but as long-term investments in to
the playoffs, they are hard to keep
faith in.
Offense
is the name of the game when you’re
trying to beat the Puck Line in
hockey. Teams with a high offensive
punch will always reward their
betting faithful, so keep tabs
on the high-flying offense of teams
like Pittsburgh, San Jose and the
Senators.

Confused
about betting on hockey? It’s easy! It’s
just like betting on other sports
except with a few exceptions.
The
Puck Line: The Puck Line is
the spread and it is always 1.5 points.
That means a team must win by at
least 1.5 points (or two goals) to
beat the spread. Keep your eyes on
offensively potent teams like the
Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers
and San Jose Sharks as favorites
to continually break the puck-line.
The
Money Line: No different than it
is in any other sport. Play the
money line to win straight up and
cash in – no pesky Puck Lines
here.
Over/Under: You can easily bet on
teams to break the over/under in
NHL betting. Simply select over/under
the teams combined goals scored and
you win. You can also select the
Team Total Points which is simply
the number of goals scored by an
individual team in a game.
